David and Freda bring a unique combination of traditional and modern approaches to font design and implementation, having worked in every technological development of type design since hot metal, including the beginnings of digital font technology. Their craft skills and pre-digital experience lend integrity and quality to their type design.
Their involvement with design and typography gives them a highly individual approach to their work as type designers. This is also motivated by personal dialogue with designers from all over the world. Nothing makes them happier than when someone sends in a superb example of The Foundry fonts in use – and fortunately this happens quite often.
The type design careers of David Quay and Freda Sack began during a time when design technology was rapididly changing. This experience, together with their work at the forefront of digital font technology in the late 1970s and early 1980s, has made both partners very aware of the importance of such developments. The significance of similar current challenges, brought about by the essential use of type for screen, device and web, is therefore fully appreciated.
The central focus for David and Freda has always been to be able to spend more time designing typefaces, and to have time for other creative pursuits. This seeming conflict of needs and interests prompted them to look at how they could best achieve yet another another major change in formats and licensing models, and fulfil their collective creative aims. They were inspired to talk to colleagues at Monotype to find a way forward that would give them the freedom and flexibility desired.
The outcome of these deliberations and discussions was that, during the past year 2013, Freda and David decided to work closely with Monotype towards a new era where all The Foundry typefaces would be available as web fonts, and for use in e-publications, mobile apps, server-based applications, consumer devices and other products all to be licensed exclusively through Monotype.
Now customers can benefit from Monotype’s global distribution network, the most up-to-date technology and a range of flexible licensing solutions, enabling continued use of The Foundry typefaces for a wider range of uses. David and Freda benefit from being able to concentrate on what they do best – designing typefaces and growing the collection.
Architype Konstrukt is a collection of avant garde typefaces deriving mainly from the work of artists/designers of the inter-war years, whose ideals have helped to shape the design philosophies of the modernist movement in Europe. Due to their experimental nature character sets may be limited.

David Quay is one of the principals of The Foundry type design partnership. He is a graphic designer, type designer, typographer and teacher, originally from London now resident in The Netherlands. He has also designed fonts for Letraset, ITC, and Berthold AG.
David studied graphic communication at Ravensbourne College of Art & Design from 1963–67. For the next seven years he worked in various leading London design companies as a packaging and graphic designer. From 1975 he worked as a freelance designer specializing in lettering and logotypes, until forming Quay & Gray with Paul Gray, in 1983. He started his own company David Quay Design in 1987 to concentrate on graphic and typographic design. He also began to design his first text typefaces subsequently released by the International Typeface Corporation (ITC), New York and H Berthold AG, Germany.
Since the late 1980s he has worked in partnership with Freda Sack on a broad range of type projects. The natural progression for their collective skills and experience was setting up an independent type foundry, and in 1989 they co-founded The Foundry, to design, manufacture and licence their exclusive typefaces. As a partnership their commissions have included bespoke typefaces, marks and logotypes – a directory typeface to be readable at very small sizes for Yellow Pages (awarded a D&AD Silver); corporate fonts for BG plc (British Gas) and NatWest bank, as well as signage typefaces for the UK railway infrastructure and the Lisbon Metro system, Portugal.
David lectures internationally in typography and type design. He has had a long association with the London College of Printing (now LCC) and was a visiting lecturer at the Danmarks Designskole Copenhagen and the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach. For three years he was professor of typography and book design at the Fachhochschule Mainz. In 2000 this prompted a move from London to Wiesbaden. Based in Amsterdam from 2001, he taught typography and design at Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgevin St Joost /Avans Hogeschool Breda. He continued to work closely with Freda Sack and Foundry Types in London to expand The Foundry typeface library.
David was one of the founder members of Letter Exchange, and its chairman for many years. He was elected a Fellow of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) in 1992 and was joint chair of the society with Freda Sack from 1994–9. During this period they ran a popular lecture series inviting leading international speakers to London. The Dutch lectures led to David’s connection with Amsterdam, and The Foundry’s collaboration with Wim Crouwel on the Architype Crouwel Collection and Foundry Gridnik
Currently David lives in The Netherlands working as a type and graphic designer and creating new typefaces for The Foundry.
Freda Sack is a British type designer and typographer, one of the principals of The Foundry type design partnership. She also has fonts included in the Letraset, ITC, and Linotype libraries.
Freda studied typography at Maidstone College of Art, School of Printing. Her type design career started at Letraset, and included working with URW Hamburg developing the first font creation applications. Since the late 1970s she has worked for various font manufacturers including Stempel, Linotype, Berthold and ITC, in all aspects of type design and font development. During this time she has created numerous fonts particularly in photosetting technology for advertising.
Since the late 1980s she has worked in partnership with David Quay on a broad range of type projects. The natural progression for their collective skills and experience was setting up an independent type foundry, and in 1989 they co-founded The Foundry, to design, manufacture and licence their exclusive typefaces. About a decade later, David’s yearning to spend more time teaching in mainland Europe was realized when he became a professor in Germany, and then located to Amsterdam. Meanwhile Freda set up Foundry Types Ltd in 2000 to manage and further develop The Foundry fonts. Still working closely together, the typeface library was expanded to cover further formats and various languages, with several new families added by the partners.
Foundry Types was commissioned to design more corporate typefaces notably for Swiss International Airlines, new fonts for NatWest, More Than, the Science Museum and in multi languages for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Freda was awarded an Honorary Master of Arts by the University for the Creative Arts, and is a governor on the UCA Board. She was co-chair of the International Society of Typographic Designers with David Quay 1994–9 when they ran the memorable ISTD Lecture series; and ISTD Chair from 2000–4. Now as a Fellow, past-president and board director of ISTD, she is dedicated to promoting typography in all of its inspiring forms. She is also a member of Letter Exchange and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Currently Freda lives and works in central London as a design consultant, and education advisor. She enjoys lecturing and giving workshops to students and professionals internationally, and developing more fonts for The Foundry.
